Welcome back to the summer term in Year 1!
First of all, I would like to thank the many parents who were able to attend our Year 1 Open Morning on the 22nd March. It was wonderful to see so many people attend, and to see you all taking part in our Dough Disco and Phonics challenges! We will be holding our next Open Morning during the final summer term.
Children are encouraged to independent, both in their work and in their everyday school lives. We ask children to take more responsibility for their own learning, but we will always provide support and encouragement for those that require it!
During this term, the Year 1 children will be sitting the national Phonics Screening Test, where they will be asked to read a list of real and ‘alien’ words. We will be doing lots of practice of this in our Phonics lessons in school!
Our Summer term topics are:
First Half Term: Giants and Castles
Second Half Term: Life in the Wild
During our Giants and Castles topic, we will be focusing on a variety of texts, including stories such as Jack and the Beanstalk and non-fiction texts about growing plants and castles.
During this term, we will be going on a class visit to Conisborough Castle, where we will be exploring life in a castle from the past, which will allow us to investigate another setting for our own fiction writing!
In Science, we will be investigating a variety of plants, and studying the different parts of a plant and what plants need to grow.
In Geography, we will be investigating our local environment and in particular, our school environment.
For our second Summer Term topic, we will be exploring a wide range of texts for the theme of ‘Life in the Wild’. We will also be studying poetry and non-fiction texts to enrich this topic.
In our Science work, we will be looking at a variety of animals in order to name, classify and label them.
In our History topic, we will be looking at Holidays now and in the past.
For our up-to-date PE days, please see the sign outside the classroom door. Please ensure your child has indoor and outdoor P.E. kit in school each week, including pumps or trainers. Outdoor kit is important as the class will be taking part in sessions outside, so a jacket and trousers are a necessity! All P.E. kit (including shoes!) MUST be named to avoid any misplaced items. Also, please ensure that any earrings are removed prior to the lesson. No child should be wearing earrings during P.E. lessons.
We use the Seesaw app (available on both Apple and Android tablets) to communicate class-specific messages to parents, and also to share activities and learning that has taken place in school. Please make sure you sign up to this app, and please speak to Mrs Leivers if you need any support with this!
If you require any assistance from the teaching or support staff in Year 1, please speak to us. We look forward to continuing working with you and your child this year!
