No child will underachieve

Year 2

Year 2

In Class Two we promote a safe and nurturing learning environment, where children are encouraged to try their best and challenge themselves on a daily basis. Our aim is to ensure that all children enjoy their learning and feel happy to come to school, whilst making good progress in all areas of the Curriculum.

Our summer term topics are:

Term 5 – Curious Creatures

This is a Literacy and Science based topic.

During our topic we will be writing descriptions of different mini-beasts as well as non-chronological reports about their habitats, appearance and diet.

In Science we shall be learning all about the habitats of difference animals, including some insects and other mini-beasts. We shall be exploring the school grounds, looking for micro-habitats and observing the residents there.

From a Geography point of view, we will be mapping out different habitats around the world and comparing them.

Term 6 – Fire Starters

This is a Literacy and History based topic.

During Term 6 we will be learning about dragons and other mythical creatures. I don’t want to give too much away, but there will be some exciting discoveries! We shall be writing reports, stories and eye-witness accounts.

Additionally we will be learning about coal mining as part of our local history topic. We will have a talk from the School Library Service, teaching us about what life was like down in the coal mines. The children will have chance to ask questions and find out lots of interesting information.

We are having a HUGE push on reading in school at the moment – I cannot stress how important it is that your child reads each day. This can be any text of interest to them, we want to encourage reading for pleasure. Children will receive a raffle ticket and merit point for each occasion they read in their reading record (a maximum of 7 a week) and will be entered into the prize draw in Celebration Assembly on Fridays. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

PE days are Monday and Thursday. Please make sure that your child has an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school (including pumps).

Homework will be handed out each Friday and will be collected the following Wednesday. Your child will also receive weekly spellings that will be tested informally throughout the week. They will bring home a school reading book – as mentioned previously, a little bit of reading each day will significantly help your child with both their reading and writing in class.

Thank you for your continued support with reading and homework!

If you aren’t already connected to Seesaw and would like to become connected, so you can view images, videos and notes about your child’s learning each week, then please ask for a new letter. I can easily print out a new letter for you to scan on your phone. Just let me know!
