We are looking forward to an exciting start in Year 1!
Our aim is to reinforce all of the skills that your child has learned in Foundation and to embed these into more structured learning tasks. During Year 1, the children will have access to Continuous Provision and a play-based learning environment. This is to ensure a smooth transition from F2 and to enable children to feel confident in their new surroundings.
Children are encouraged to be more independent, both in their work and in their everyday school lives. We ask children to take more responsibility for their own learning, but provide support and encouragement for those that require it!
Our Autumn term topics are:
First Half Term: Rainforest Adventure
Second Half Term: Festivals and Celebrations
Our Rainforest Adventure topic provides cross-curricular learning, particularly in the subjects of Literacy and Geography. During this topic, children will be asked to focus on a series of rainforest-themed stories, including ‘Slowly, Slowly said the Sloth’, ‘Monkey Puzzle’, ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ and ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. We will be learning about life in the Amazon rainforest, as well as life in rainforests around the world, such as in China, Africa and Australia.
We are also going on a class visit to the Tropical Butterfly House at the end of the term, to reinforce what we have learned about animals and their habitats in the rainforest.
Our Festivals and Celebrations topic is an exciting way to learn about special days in our lives, and also in the lives of others. We will be studying the importance of Diwali, Christmas and Hannukkah as well as the meaning behind Bonfire Night. We will be looking at lots of non-fiction texts about these subjects; this will help encourage children to develop a love of all books, not just stories. During this topic, we will be looking at Light and Dark in Science, and will include various investigations around this.
We will be working hard with your child during Phonics sessions and in other subjects to develop their Phonic knowledge. During Year 1, every child will sit a standardised Phonics Screening Test. This is a national test, which every Year 1 child in the country will sit. It is very important that your child practices their spellings given to them each week, and also that they read their school reading book regularly. Children will also be given Literacy or Numeracy homework on a weekly basis, which should be returned on a Monday morning so the net piece can be added at the start of the week We appreciate your support in this matter.
Our P.E. days are Monday and Friday. Please ensure your child has indoor and outdoor P.E. kit in school each week, including pumps. All P.E. kit MUST be named to avoid any misplaced items. Also, please ensure that earrings and studs are removed prior to the lesson. No child should be wearing earrings during P.E. lessons.
If you require any assistance from the teaching or support staff in Year 1, please speak to us. We look forward to working with you and your child this year!
